Leading the winning GOP effort was Ward Baker, Hagerty’s main campaign consultant. With several successful elections under his belt, including U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn’s 2018 race, Baker said the Hagerty campaign focused on three things: the 1st Congressional District in East Tennessee, Shelby County and the state’s rural areas.
Hagerty’s campaign — led by Baker Group Strategies — had an army of staff, interns and volunteers at its disposal, while Sethi’s team was significantly smaller. At campaign events, Hagerty’s team had throngs of staffers wearing campaign T-shirts, holding up signs and talking with voters.
“Just because you win a race, people then think you know it all,” he said. “We always go back and look at how we could’ve done better.”
